SMS QR Code FAQs
Does SMS QR work on all phones?
Yes. Scanning opens the native SMS app on both Android and iPhone. The phone number and message are pre-filled.
Can the message be longer than 160 characters?
Yes, but long messages create larger QR codes that may be harder to scan. Keep messages under 100 characters for best results.
SMS QR Code for Business — India
SMS QR codes are popular with small businesses in India for customer feedback, support, and order confirmations. Print on packaging, bills, or shop banners so customers can text you instantly. Works on every mobile phone — no internet or app needed for the customer.
Difference Between SMS QR and WhatsApp QR
SMS QR opens the native SMS app and works even without internet or a smartphone with WhatsApp. WhatsApp QR requires the WhatsApp app to be installed. For reaching all customers including those without smartphones, SMS QR is more reliable.
When SMS QR Beats WhatsApp QR in India
WhatsApp is the default for personal chat, but SMS still wins in specific business situations:
- Rural or older customer base — Many customers over 50 or in tier-3 towns use feature phones or rarely open WhatsApp; SMS reaches them without friction.
- OTP-adjacent flows — Anything the customer expects to look like a bank message (delivery confirmation, appointment reminder) fits the SMS channel better.
- Government-facing enquiries — Sarkari offices and utilities still communicate mainly over SMS.
- Order confirmations for tiffin services / kirana stores — Regular customers can send a one-line "Aaj ka order confirm" SMS by scanning a laminated card near the cash counter.
- Emergency contact card — Elderly relatives can carry a card with an SMS QR that sends "I need help — please call" to a caregiver's number.
SMS Campaign Ideas That Actually Work
- Feedback QR on the bill — pre-fill "Rating out of 5: __ — Comments: __." Merchants get 5× more responses than a URL survey.
- Free consultation booking — pre-fill "Book consultation for __ (name) on __ (date)." Print on flyers and hoardings.
- Restaurant table reservation — pre-fill "Table for __ people at __ time. Name: __."
- Missed-call to SMS upgrade — replace the old "give missed call for callback" with a scannable SMS QR; you get the customer name straight away.
SMS Character Limit and QR Size
SMS is capped at 160 characters per message (70 for Devanagari/Hindi). If your pre-filled message is long, the QR gets larger and denser, which hurts scan reliability. Keep pre-filled messages under 60 English characters or 30 Hindi characters for a compact, easily scanned QR. Longer messages will still work, but require a bigger printed size to scan reliably.
Does the receiver pay for the SMS?
No. The person scanning sends the SMS from their own phone using their carrier plan. Standard SMS charges apply on their end. The receiver gets a normal SMS at no cost.
Can I pre-fill just the phone number without a message?
Yes. Leave the message field blank — the QR will open the SMS app with only the phone number pre-filled. The user can type any message they want before sending.
Does SMS QR work on feature phones (non-smartphones)?
Feature phones generally cannot scan QR codes unless they have a dedicated QR scanner app. On modern smartphones (Android and iPhone), SMS QR codes work natively with the camera app.
