Is It Safe to Scan Random QR Codes?
This is one of the most important questions in India today, where "QR quishing" scams are common — fraudsters replace legitimate UPI QR stickers at shops with their own, or send fake payment QRs over WhatsApp. QRMaker's scanner helps you stay safe because it shows you the full destination before you tap it. Rules to follow when you scan a QR from a stranger:
- Read the URL before opening it. Our scanner reveals the exact link — check the domain matches what you expect (e.g. a bank's real domain, not a look-alike).
- Never scan a "refund QR." If someone tells you to scan a QR to receive money, it is always a scam — UPI QRs only send money, never receive.
- Check the UPI payee name. Our scanner shows the payee before you tap "Open UPI App" — verify it matches the shop or person you want to pay.
- Ignore QRs that ask for OTP or PIN inside a web page. Legitimate payments happen inside your UPI app, never on a web form.
- Do not scan QRs from unknown WhatsApp forwards — many phishing campaigns use urgent-sounding messages to trick people into scanning.
QR Code Scanner vs Phone Camera — Which Is Better?
Modern iPhone and Android phones detect QR codes automatically through the built-in camera. So why use an online scanner? Three reasons:
- Scanning from a screenshot or saved image. Phone cameras only scan live QRs — they cannot decode a QR that is inside a photo, a WhatsApp forward, a PDF, or an email attachment. Upload the image here instead.
- Scanning on a desktop PC. Windows, Mac, and Linux computers do not have built-in QR scanning. QRMaker works in any browser on any operating system.
- Seeing the raw content before you tap. When your phone camera detects a QR, it usually just shows a notification with the link — sometimes the shortened one. Our scanner shows the complete decoded content so you can inspect it safely.
What Types of QR Codes Can This Scanner Read?
The scanner automatically detects and formats these common types:
- URL / website links — opens in a new tab
- UPI payment QR — extracts UPI ID, payee name, amount; opens your UPI app to pay
- WhatsApp click-to-chat — opens WhatsApp with the phone number pre-filled
- WiFi credentials — reveals SSID and password so you can connect manually
- vCard business card — saves the contact to your phone with one tap
- Email (mailto:) — opens your mail app with subject and body pre-filled
- Phone (tel:) and SMS (sms:) — dials or texts the number
- Location (geo:) — opens Google Maps at the coordinates
- Calendar events (VCALENDAR) — adds the event to your calendar
- Plain text (English, Hindi, or any language) — displayed with copy-to-clipboard
Camera QR Scanner Not Working? Try These Fixes
If the camera scanner is not starting, walk through these checks in order:
- Camera permission — Look for the camera icon in the address bar; if blocked, click it and select "Allow." On iPhone Safari, go to Settings → Safari → Camera and set to "Allow."
- Use HTTPS — Camera access is only allowed on secure pages. QRMaker.in serves everything over HTTPS, so this is usually fine, but check the padlock is present.
- Close other apps using the camera — Google Meet, Zoom, WhatsApp video call all lock the camera. Close them and reload.
- Try the image upload tab — If the camera keeps failing, switch to "Upload Image," take a photo with your regular camera, then upload it here.
- iPhone / iOS specific — For best results use Safari; Chrome on iPhone shares Safari's engine but sometimes has slower camera startup.
